Dreams of places: house, forest, sea and meaning
House, school, forest, sea… Places in dreams are rarely incidental: they mirror our inner world, our memories, and our psychic conflicts.
For Jung, the house in a dream is a direct metaphor for the psyche — its rooms symbolizing the different layers of our personality, from the attic (consciousness) down to the cellars (the deep unconscious). School, the forest, an unfamiliar city, the endless sea: each dream setting is a space charged with emotional and symbolic resonance. Artemidorus of Ephesus devotes lengthy passages to dreams of places in his second-century Oneirocritica, distinguishing whether spaces are familiar or unknown, accessible or forbidden. In Islamic traditions, as in medieval Christian symbolism, certain dreamed places — the garden, the desert, the mountain — point to specific spiritual states. What unites all these traditions is the idea that the place we dream of tells us something essential about where we stand within.
